I am an American, but if I may judge from my experience of staying in Japan for five years, it is their nearly blind worship to sport that underlies this enthusiasm.
Almost unreasonably enough, in Japan, it is quite often to criticise someone by saying that he is good at nothing but studying; on the other hand, they seldom speak ill of someone by saying that he excels in nothing but running (or swimming or kicking a ball).
The truth is, however, that the man with a sound body, at large, seldom has so sound a mind as his body. Though the population of athletes is smaller than that of scholars, crimes committed by the former are far oftener heard of.
It is almost a myth that professional wrestlers never hurt common people with their fists. The bully in a school is seldom a student whose achievement in learning is above the average.
Needless to say, the numerical majority are those who aren't good at learning and thus have selfish jealousy towards the learned people.
It may be that they get glad to see the minority of the intellectuals be defeated in fame and wealth by the athletes, who are also inferior in learning
